Bekaa Valley Girls, A Lebanese Saga    -   performance at Vancouver's Dance Centre

Thursday November 26, 12 noon - Rahma Haddad & Lynette Harper, The Dance Centre, Vancouver BC

Rahma Haddad and Lynette Harper are renowned as two of BC's most outstanding Middle Eastern dance exponents, and make a welcome return to the Discover Dance! series to present Bekaa Valley Girls: A Lebanese Saga. Performing a vivid array of dances bursting with sensuality, expressiveness and joyful grace, Haddad and Harper explore their shared Lebanese roots and their Arab-Canadian identities, providing a personal and cultural context for experiencing contemporary genres of Arab dance.

Instructors Lynette, Sheelagh and Bruce in La Manzanilla, Mexico

DSC01030

Bruce will be teaching Shoot-Out in Mexico, a 5-day photography workshop February 15-20.  For detailed information see SimpleCyber.ca

Lynette has a unique approach to teaching Middle Eastern dance, integrating emotional expression, improvisation, and tarab (the ecstatic feeling associated with music) with technique and choreography.  Explore the sparkle and shimmies of Egyptian dance, sinuous Turkish moves, and earthy Roma styles, combining traditional folk dances with contemporary moves and music.

Sheelagh teaches how to dance with your spirit, to dance your joy and your sorrow.  A longtime bellydancer and folk dancer, she brings different ethnic styles together in a vibrant earthy gestural story of life.  Formerly with the outstanding troupe Melissae, Sheelagh now spends part of every year in Mexico where she teaches bellydance.  Learn some of the fabulous dance styles of people of the Gypsy Trail, from flowing and reverent to wild and exuberant; and find new ways to express yourself through rhythmic freestyle dance.

Coming in April

More Beyond the Basics workshops

Beyond the Basics workshops with Lynette focus on cultural context, dance vocabulary, choreography and improvisation ideas for intermediate and advanced students, teachers and professional dancers interested in traditional and contemporary Arab and "fusion" dance forms.  Workshops are multilevel, but some dance background is recommended. Class size limited.
